The problem with Stacking

For those of you unfamiliar with stacking, it is the term we use to describe the conversational technique designed to keep a conversation moving after the opener. It is an established centre piece at the London Daygame Model museum. A quick but terrible example would be:

Opener, Him: “excuse me, I just saw you over there and I just had to come over and tell her that she looked really nice” (yes – many people still refer to girls in the 3rd person while pointing over there).

Her: “thank-you

Stack, Him: “yeah I thought she looked so relaxed, I thought she’s coming from a yoga session or just smoked some weed”.

Her: “oh really (giggles) looks at you with dead eyes because she’s never heard THAT before no I’m just going to meet friends”.

Him: “oh I see. So you’re meeting friends. You are drinking vodka or going for dinner?

And thus begins the Double stacking/Snip and stack circular malaise surface skim that is the self-immolation of many daygamers.

The main problem with standard stacking is threefold: firstly, that you’re placing the onus on the girl for the first minute (sometimes longer) to carry the conversation as you navigate her across largely meaningless off-the-shelf, time-worn tropes* which in the age of post-daygame – have been heard ad infinitum ad nauseam by many women, sometimes several times a day – yet you insist that she carries the weighted rucksack and endure the absurdity. The second aspect is that its dead calories and largely meaningless because you’re not thinking and merely passing dogshit from your right hand to your left hand in some weird game of lets see how long I can talk shit for. The third aspect (and this has become so apparent to me through coaching daygame) is just how much an over reliance on canned mantra, especially when you’re a beginner, can really stunt your daygame and make for an awful starting experience that could last for several thousand sets (yes, I have coached guys who still use the stacks below* some 2,000 sets into their daygame). This mindset is anathema to the fuel of daygame which is authenticity and cold reading.

The more astute readers will by now have picked up on a second, more pernicious form of self-harm that this may lead to – the received wisdom of pre-approach. This is where men specifically look for archetypes or visuals that suite their preconceived ideas about what is approachable versus what is not – and by extension – what fits their canned assumption stacks.

I have repeated this many times to guys that if even 20 sets per 100 of their opens contain authentic cold reads and situational assumptive openers, then the experience will be far more memorable both for you and the girl.

You look like a crazy lawyer

Let’s look at one example:

Traditional shortform Daygame stack: ‘You look like Trinity from Matrix on her way to kill someone right now” The main issue with this is that it’s a one-trick pony. She gets a mere two seconds to recover from the shock/surprise/nerves/excitement of being opened before you have passed the buck back to her and said “your turn to speak”. You have lost that incredible opportunity to allow her settle, to look at you, to breathe and lock eyes. You have no scope to use your voice tone as you narrate a genuinely interesting opener/stack.

Brooding Sea Narrative stacking: “Right (pause) I know what you are. I’ve figured it out. I can’t believe no-one else has noticed, but I did [she’s listening – attention piqued]. Well. I had heard rumours that they still existed but looking at you I can see they do (pause). You’re one of those daytime vampires aren’t you. I can tell you are. Look. Don’t even try to deny it. It’s obvious. How much blood have you drank so far? How many men have you killed today? 15? 50? More?

I don’t relent. I continue the weaving,

“I can’t believe you’re walking past a church as well. How very dare you. Aren’t you afraid of my cross (holds crucifix necklace close to her). My God you’re not scared. How powerful are you. Am I in danger?

All the while I’ve been delivering this as  harmless fun, with great voice tone and great eye contact. I have carried the rucksack and used my non-verbals and verbals in harmony with one another. She knows I’ll be fun on a date**

*You look like Trinity from Matrix on her way to kill someone right now.

*You look like you have been drinking vodka all night and are on way to get coffee

*You don’t look like you’re from around here. Perhaps Spanish or Italian vibe.

*You look really serious like a crazy (artist, lawyer, accountant) or secret artist.

**and yes – she was a +1.
